I was recently fired from Starbucks for refusing to ask customers for their names to write on the cups. My store and I had heard about a woman who was attacked after a man found out her name at a Starbucks here in Hawaii, through this cup-marking nonsense, and fooled her into believing he knew her - and was able to get close enough to assault her. Because of this case, I refused to submit to this policy that could expose customers and their privacy to dangerous situations. The District Manager who fired me for this, is also the same District Manager of the store where the assault situation allegedly occurred. Coicidence? Fat chance.
They're evil, in so many different ways. They fired me for knowing too much. While I'm glad to be out of this terrible company now, I can no longer afford to live in Hawaii because of the high cost of living and low paying jobs, and must leave for better opportunities. How dare anyone admit that they "feel sorry for Starbucks and the bad rep they're getting," are you people being paid to defend them?
I wish I had known about this movie before its completion, if there had been some way I could have contributed to the cause. Anyway, I'm greatly anticipating its release.
Thanks again for being a voice for the little guy.
As Lincoln once said, "Lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for."
Don't drink Starbucks. If you need coffee, support the little guy, they are our last connection to our communities and fellow man. Starbucks just wants to fatten you up, fill you with preservatives, give you diabetes, and take your money. They're no better than the tobacco companies. They're faux-philanthropic, toxic and cultish - trying to swallow up the world one street corner at a time.
I should know, I worked for the green monster.

Actually in fact the marking cups policy is a policy that is active in most Starbucks Coffee houses. If store managers get their baristas to do as they are instructed they get bonuses. I work for Starbucks, for three long years. They have let me down in so many ways. They lie lie lie, lead you on and on. Don't be blind to the truth. anyone who sticks with the company long enough finds out its all smoke are mirrors. like that fake email in early 07' from howard shultz. full of lies. all it is.

I believe some of you are missing the point of why this lady was fired, which was for a no good reason, starbucks has an amazing turnover rate in their stores mostly. It's a good reason for them to fire someone such as her in order to hire a new smiling face that isn't questioning the actions of a major moneymaking corporation.

miann and ambivalent79, you both are being thoroughly ignorant. starbucks is undeniably a company who only wants to employ the smiling faces of people who can look away from their corporate bourgeois tactics. i, like so many others, used to work for them, so i'm not speaking from inexperience. i quit because i saw how ridiculous and disgusting they were, despite the nice pay and stock options. kiele, i hope youre able to find another job there in hawaii. best wishes. ;)

I must say, Starbucks does a good job when it comes to employee compensation (insurance, discounted stock, discounts, fair pay, etc.) I worked for them for over three years, and depsite their reputation as a great company to work for, there are a lot of things that go on within the corporation that make me never want to work for them again. Howard Schultz heads a brilliant, profitable company that is globally renowned. However, lower managers are often underqualified for their jobs or simply selfish. Starbucks' turnover is high because its baristas are 100% part-time workers looking for temporary employment. The barista position is in such high demand that it is easy and profitable for management to replace workers who are unwilling to follow guidelines. Kiele, I am sorry about your situation. All I can say is it is unfortunate that Starbucks has such little interest in decreasing turnover.

I am currently an employee at Starbucks and I agree that the company is taking a turn for the worse. Kiele, I feel for ya, hun.
miann and ambivalent79, do either of you even work for a Starbucks? If you don't, then you don't know what you are talking about, so don't go pickin on Kiele. People are so surprised of all the crap that us Partners are going through there right now. I've been working for the company for a year and a half now and it appears that nothing is to show for it. julianeduardo85 , I totally agree with you, by the way.
When I started, I was going into my senior year of high school. I was told that this would be a wonderful part time job that would be flexible to work around my school hours. Now, I am entering college and because the company is so worried about keeping their money and crap, they are laying off and firing people left and right, while making the rest of us work 10x as hard with no raises in return. From this time last year, our staff at our store has been nearly cut in half. We went from having I believe...36 employees to 11. We have a very big and busy store. With the holidays cming up, I don't know how we are going to survive without killing each other. And the company refuses to hire in replacements for people who are leaving or calling back people who have been laid off to help us, when they KNOW that we are struggling!
I have to work a full time job now WHILE going to school full time as well. My parents were both recently laid off of their jobs, so I am the only person in the house that is getting a steady paycheck. I need this job to help me with money for school. And I'm not the only person in this boat. There are many other Partners that work with me and at other stores who are being forced to work full time or no time. This is not right, nor is it fair. The company used to actually care about us baristas. They used to be helpful, give bonuses around the holidays, and took very good care of everybody. Now, I don't know if its JUST the economy thats causing this or if the company is just turning evil, but things are not right now. They don't give a flying crap about what we, the baristas, are going through. WE are the ones who make this company work! Without us, they would be NOTHING. They can't sell coffee if there isn't somebody there making it!
Don't get me wrong. I love my job. I've wanted to work in a coffee shop ever since I was little, because I think coffee is an art. Being able to get a job at the biggest name coffee company was an honor to me at first! I love the atmospher, I love my coworkers, I love my customers. But the corporation is ruining everything, and I can't afford to lose this job, especially when no one else is hiring.
So if Starbucks wants to stay alive in any way, shape, or form, then they need to stop counting their money and start focusing on the people who MAKE THIS COMPANY WORK and that is US, THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE COUNTER.
I just wish I knew how to convey this to someone up high in the company. However, i'm too afraid too, because I can't lose my job right now.
Kiele, best of luck to ya hun. We all feel your pain.

I am absolutely dumbfounded by this whole thing, it is so hard to believe that such trivial matters can have consequences which indeed affect the very existence of millions of people. I am indeed ashamed at times to be a part of the Human race. Extreme greed is a mark of unregenerate "man". Time is short, these people need to think about what they will say to The Creator when He asks them why they felt that they are entitled to such outrageous profits etc, while at the same time continuing to subject the people in these other countries to a life of SLAVERY and abject POVERTY. Any organization or individual that continues to reap the profits from this EVIL setup will indeed someday have a lot of explaining to do. Get out of these places and find something to do that will give you the peace in your heart that you seek, and in turn will bring joy in knowing that YOU at least have done in some small way what you can to help those much less fortunate than we are. DO NOT BE A PART OF SUCH INJUSTICE. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. To do nothing is to condone.

I believe that the individual that was fired for not marking cups with the customers names may have been fired for more that just that. Being in management I have found that it is quite difficult for someone to just "get fired" from starbucks. Starbucks HR has many requirements for termination that must be met prior to a termination becoming official. In fact the only things that qualify for immediate termination is Theft and cash mismanagement. For example, I have seen one person fired on the spot by a DM and they were stealing product and selling it on eBay. I have seen one partner fight against termination twice and win. He is definitely an unwelcome partner at our store but you make your own bed.
One thing I know is that Starbucks has no official "Policies". There are, however many practices and procedures that the company subscribe to. Asking for the customers name is a way to invite customers to become more than just customers. Its terribly unfortunate that because one man using the starbucks practice to hurt another human, that Starbucks then must take the responsibility for that persons actions.
Have I been in complete agreement with all of their choices over the last few years? No. Do I believe that this company is any more corrupt or responsible for the fate of our countries nutritional condition than say McDonalds? No.
I encourage anyone that reads this with SUBSTANTIAL and CREDITABLE evidence of corruption and unfair trade acts to share and persuade me.
I work with lots of young (and old) adults that have little to no concept of workmanship or teamwork. They could account for the high turnover, mostly because lots of people think "It would be great to work here, I am a regular and I love coffee" but they fail to see how much work it really entails to be a competent Barista. Those individuals do make it a difficult work environment but the company I and they work for allows for growth and improvement so that everyone can excel in life.

I think there is something absolutely fascinating about a former partner complaining that they were fired for refusing to do their job, and because of that, Starbucks is an evil corporation.
She did note that she had what she felt was good reason: a woman was attacked after a man learned her name, "fooled her into believing he knew her - and was able to get close enough to assault her."
While the story is terrible, it should be noted that it's not cup-marking that should be blamed for the assault, but rather the unstable man who actually committed the assault. Refusing to mark cups because you're afraid of being assaulted is akin to avoiding every paved road because you fear vehicular manslaughter. It'll definitely protect you from the very specific threat that makes you tremble, but don't expect anyone to make concessions for you. No one is going to help you get around to wherever it is you need to go if you refuse to cross a single road. No one is going to employ you if you decide to create your own solution to an isolated problem that is unlikely to affect you in the first place. Especially when that solution involves not doing your job.
Do what I do. Mark cups when your boss is in the store. Don't mark cups when they're away. Everybody's happy. You might think that there's something of cowardice in that, that somewhere Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi, and Sojourner Truth are turning in their graves because some grave injustice is befalling a barista. But remember, you were a barista asked to write a name on a cup so that you had one more opportunity to connect with a customer. That's it. There are people with real problems, and you gave up your job because you wanted to be a pain in someone's ass. I'd fire you too.
